Let me start by stating what might be obvious to many readers of this blog: the concept of parent-orchestrated, pre-planned kids’ activities is not really done in Waldorf early childhood education. Waldorf educators put an emphasis on allowing children to learn through unstructured free play, engaging with nature, storytelling, songs, verse and imitation of/involvement in household tasks.
While I am still learning and grappling with the many complex reasons why things are done the way they are in the Steiner system, I personally see no harm in parent-offered invitations to play from time to time, especially given the fact that my eldest son really loves it when we do stuff like this. It breaks the day up and breaks the monotony of yet-another-afternoon-in-the-playroom for us both. Plus, it keeps Master C focussed and quiet(er) while Baby J naps.
I am not a Waldorf purist, clearly, as much of what is included below is pulled from other educational philosophies such as Montessori or Reggio. Also, I should mention straight up that I did not create these ideas from my own imagination: I wish! Pretty much all of the activities that we have done have been inspired by others on Pinterest. If you are seeking more ideas for activities at home with your kids, check out my Pinterest board that has tonnes of great ideas from around the net.
So, without further ado, if you are looking for a bit of something to do with your little man or miss today, feast your eyes on these tried-and-tested activities that are sure to be a hit in your home:
